Reptilia indet., ?cranium element, 22/LMK

Reptilia indet.

Middle Triassic, Lower Muschelkalk (Anisian), Gogolin Beds

Upper Silesia, Poland

The specimen is a bone or bone fragment from an unidentified reptile.

The bone’s structure and robustness almost certainly rule out fish and amphibians (the lack of ornamentation typical of amphibians).

The surface of the bone is not smooth, but has a fairly regular texture that is not the result of abrasion or weathering. The shape of a regular arch, widening at the base, does not appear consistent with any element of the postcranial skeleton. The above suggests it may be one of the cranial bones. Due to the lack of comparison, no further taxonomic or osteologic identification is possible at this time.

All suggestions regarding the specimen’s identification are welcome.

SilesianTriassic is a private hobby project about fossils from the Triassic of Silesia. I try to document and interpret specimens as best as possible, but identifications are tentative and may be incorrect.
