Reptilia indet., medial gastralium, 49/LMK

Reptilia indet.
medial gastralium
Dating uncertain – probably the boundary of Upper Röt and Lower Gogolin Beds, Triassic
Upper Silesia, Poland

Description

A partially preserved medial gastralium from an indeterminate Triassic reptile. Medial gastralium is a V-shaped dermal bone resembling a rib and forming part of the gastral basket – a cage or basket-like structure protecting the organs ventrally.

A bone of this type yields virtually no information regarding the animal’s taxonomic classification. Besides the fact that it was a reptile, we can guess that it was a marine reptile, perhaps Nothosurus or Cymatosaurus, but these are just speculations based on the frequency of occurrence.

SilesianTriassic is a private hobby project about fossils from the Triassic of Silesia. I try to document and interpret specimens as best as possible, but identifications are tentative and may be incorrect.
